One of the best ways to explore the river is by kayak or canoe. (Or cruise along, paddle in hand, on a standup paddle board.) Grab all the rental equipment and gear you need from Alder Creek Rentals, located at Browns Ferry Park in Tualatin, for a leisurely day of water wandering. If you have your own kayaks, canoes or SUP boards, head down to the boat dock at Wilsonville’s Memorial Park (launch not allowed).

Boones Ferry Marina is the boating playground for the Willamette Valley. A public launch ramp for boats, free parking and spots for fishing makes the marina an ideal location for a fun day in the sun. 

A Big Floaty Party on the River

Want to be a part of the biggest river celebration in Portland? Check out The Big Float, Portland’s craziest splash party. Every July,  river huggers and inner tubers descend on the city for a lazy float from Poet’s Beach to Waterfront Park. A music barge even makes an appearance. Grab your unicorn floaty and hop in the river with thousands of your new best friends. Who knows? You may even break a Guinness World Record for the most people floating in a line.

River Cruising in Style

If relaxing on the deck of a yacht with champagne in hand is more your style, take a dinner cruise on the Portland Spirit as it winds under bridges and glides past the city skyline. Live piano music serenades an evening filled with city lights, stunning views and delicious, locally-sourced NW cuisine.

Portland Dragon Boat Racing

For an unforgettable day on the river, head to June’s Dragon Boat Races. Part of the Portland Rose Festival festivities, the Dragon Boat Races bring an exciting Chinese tradition to the Portland area. More than 80 local,  national and international teams race down the Willamette River in dragon-themed boats for a colorful spectacle of culture and athleticism.
